Updated Toy Shelves

I’m involved with a local Moms club and every year we do a children’s consignment sale to get rid of all our extra clothes and raise money for a local organization that benefits kids and families. This year I did some selling and some shopping and came across a great piece of furniture.

My son’s toy area in the basement was growing and stuff was being piled up all over the place. I had found some great shelf organizers for upwards of $70 at Target but didn’t want to fork over all the money for something like this:

Fortunately at the consignment sale, I found this beauty (already filled with my toys):

But, as you can see, it was missing a few buckets. Either one large one or 2 small ones. But I’m a dreamer and figured I could do something about it. So for $10, I brought this beauty home!

I took a piece of fabric that I previously used as a curtain in our egress window in the basement. It had a hem around the edges and I folded it in half. I then wrapped it around the top 2 bars and pinned the ends together, leaving a generous slack. And voila:

Restored Toy shelves

My son’s new toy organizer complete with book shelf! It fit almost all of his books perfectly! I was so excited!  It’s fun to be successful in random crafting!

Just curious — how you’re dealing with the CPSIA stuff? (Maybe you’re not in the US, but I thought you were.) Our children’s book sale (I work with the library) was alerted that for this year at least we’d be semi-safe selling a few books that are a few years older than 1985, but none of the super-old books, and for next year (when we have to prove up-front, not just hope that nobody runs a test on our sales and proves them to have lead in the paint in the pictures) all pre-1985 books are straight to the trash can. And they’ve said that’s for garage and consignment sales too – this year, so long as you’re not caught, you’re fine, but next year (well, after Feb.), the onus is on you to make sure you’re not selling any restricted products. Your shelf organizer I’m sure is absolutely fine :) (and pretty cool!), but just curious about how the sale is working around the law — especially as regards clothing. (Our local Goodwill is doing very minimal children’s clothing, and absolutely none after February, because of the law.)

Hi Marguerite! I have been meaning to do some research on this before replying but have yet to do that! Do you have any info on this as I knew nothing about it and would like to pass it along to the committee who runs our sale?

    Thanks for the info!
