Island colors

I’m staying with Carrie’s beach theme with this post of a quilt I recently finished. I picked up some beautiful batik fabrics, and put together this quilt for a friend’s graduation and birthday present.

The pattern was very simple – using a technique where you sew four sides on around a square one at a time, but don’t sew the first one on all the way until the other three are stitched on. Not sure that makes sense, but I could include some process photos if anyone is interested – just post a comment and let me know.

The photos really make the one sorta solid look a lot yellower – its actually a nice greenish lime that looks really nice against the watery blue. The all over quilting pattern used an open flowery leaf design that matched the detail of the patterned batik pretty well. I was very happy with how it finished up; a perfect, cheerful, beach-inspired lap quilt!

My friend called me when she opened her present (I had given it to her earlier in the day). She was so joyful and appreciative, it was wonderful to hear her on the phone. I think everyone should have handmade things in their lives! Now I need to get back to some other quilt projects that need to be finished up before our big move back to Delaware that starts in less than two weeks… more about those later!
